Welcome to the blog set up by Pauline Schnapper, Professor of British Civilisation at the University of Paris 3.

Here, you will find material for the Second Year class in British civilisation as well as the M1 and M2 seminars, including class schedules, reading lists and documents. You will also find a summary of British politics, with a special emphasis on my 'favourite' topics, ie political parties, institutions, Europe and foreign policy, and links to useful sites.

Glasgow East

Another by-election, and another terrible defeat for Labour, this time in the once safe Scottish seat of Glasgow East. The SNP, which won with a 22% swing. This was obviously a major victory for Alex Salmond, the Scottish First Minister, who took advantage of the UK government's lack of popularity and growing economic difficulties, especially the rise in inflation. Once again, questions about Brown's leadership are being raised. Will he survive as PM until the next general election ?
